Currently the kernel ignores RELRO segment in user mode images which does not impact there ability to execute. If the kernel honored the RELRO segment for user mode images then it could be used to protect the GOT (and PLT on some architectures) post image load from corruption. This may make it easier to recover from these types of errors (thread restart instead of process restart). Given the corruption is something the user did to himself this is only an enhancement.
